Senseless Ramblings #2: Character Evolution

The Guy Fausto

Weekly? Did I mention Weekly? I don’t think I did. Well the schedule for these is obviously whenever the hell I feel like it because I’m a lazy bastard.

I said I was going to tackle appearance next, but I lied and pulling a Vince Russo on you and swerving to talk more about your character. More specifically- character development and evolution.

Now last time I suggested making a character based off one aspect of yourself. Of course, people’s retort to this advice is no one in the main event in the WWE really has such a thick gimmick. That’s because they evolved into them. They started with one aspect of themselves, and slowly just became more like themselves in reality. You need a hook at first, then draw them in. Some examples:

Triple H. Came in as a blue blood. A fairly over the top gimmick. But through the years of his time in WWE, he eventually became his ‘cool’ character of The Game. If he came in right away like that, he would have been shat all over, as he would have been pushed down the fans throats.

Mick Foley. He didn’t come in getting cheap pops- he evolved into that by going through more interesting characters, putting his body on the line, and just plain earning the respect of the crowd. This is akin to Nate- if Nate just came in and acted like he did now, we’d ignore the guy.

The Undertaker. He was a zombie, a really over the top character. But he kept it fresh over the years, by evolving his character. He became more human. He came back once as not even a zombie anymore, but the roots were still there, and the fans still loved him. For 2000-2003 he was essentially the “cool” character everyone tries to be, but with all those years as a veteran backing his claims, so no one laughed at him.

Additionally, development and evolution keep your character fresh and interesting. If you do the same shit for too long, people get bored of it. I give you: X-Pac. The guy was ridiculously over in 98 and 99. What the hell happened? He stayed exactly the same. His matches were the same. His promos were the same. Similarly to John Cena, people started to turn on him. But he still didn’t change. Thus began X-Pac heat- not heel heat, but people being fucking sick of you heat.

OCW wise, this hasn’t happened. It had the potential to do so, like if I had followed the desires of some people, the original Face/Tweener Guy Fausto would of gotten stale and old quickly. There’s only so many ways you can fake injury to get out of a match, only so many ways you can act completely pathetic before it gets really old. So I changed the character So I’d have some fresh ideas. Versus recently did the same- he’s been the passive aggressive stoner forever before he switched to this guru gimmick. He wants to do something different- I say let him. Makes his character more interesting, and should he ever return to his passive aggressive stoner gimmick- as they say, Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Or something fruit ball like that.

But when changing your character- ALWAYS remember your roots. Guy Fausto is still a lethargic chickenshit. His whole goal in life is to sit at home, doing nothing and watching TV. Whether it’s just trying to avoid the work entirely(Run to the Hills Fausto), actively seeking termination(Head Creeps Fausto), or cozying up to the boss for the easy street in life(TV Radio Fausto), he still mainly drives himself as lethargic chickenshit.

Summarizing, basically: Just because I suggest you start with some ridiculous and over the top gimmick, doesn’t mean you should stay that way. You can move and evolve away from it over the course of time and slowly become yourself turned up to 11. People are already watching you, and won’t just dismiss you as generic garbage- because if you follow this path, you probably aren’t. You have history, and sometimes that’s enough to make it work- it’s why the Nate gimmick only works for Nate. But changes over time, no matter how small, make your character more interesting, and keeps people watching, reading, whatever more about your character. You’ll be worth wasting time on and everybody won’t hate you wish death upon you in a fiery situation.

Next time, I’ll tackle appearance. I mean it this time. Really. Maybe not. We’ll see. Go away. Leave me alone.

Nice article!

So much truth into that too.

To go on with what you said about HHH. He used to "curtsy" to the crowd.

Stone Cold didnt come in beating peoples asses neither. He used to be stunning steve austin, and slowly became the redneck we know and love.

Excellant points, and alot of rooks should really try to go on the same basis of what this dork says.

LOL! That comment made my day already.

Guy, I thought this article was great. But what i don't get is that when people can't think of a good gimmick why don't they ask for help?
